Sandwich Recipes
I regard myself as being something of a connoisseur of the gourmet sandwich. While I occasional admire simplicity in a sandwich I always try and get the best possible quality ingredients and occasionally I like to go to town and make a real humdinger. To add a new dimension to my site I have decided to occasionally add the recipes here.
The Preston Sturges
My first sandwich is named after the great American director of farces, Preston Sturges who was himself something of a self-confessed sandwich aficionado.
In fact he claims to have introduced the club sandwich to Europe as a very young man when he managed to get himself a job travelling with Isadora Duncan's all-girl dance troop on a European tour (he persuaded them that they needed someone to sell programmes). In each hotel or restaurant they visited on the tour he would ask for a club sandwich and would have to explain to the waiter what it was. He claims that in many cases the establishments then added the sandwich to their menus and it gradually spread across the continent.
My recipe is not, however, for a club sandwich - but for an exotic and (for the palate) highly stimulating take on the good old bacon sarnie.
Ingredients:
White bloomer loaf, medium sliced, toasted.
Unsalted butter
Grilled Bacon
Guacamole
1 Medium hot chilli pepper finely sliced
Lettuce
Tomato
Mayo
Black pepper
Pickled cucumber (finely sliced lengthways)
